Howe Family Genealogy - Miscellaneous Notes

Arnold - Mary Jane Arnold (b. 1835)

  • The 1861 census shows William T Arnold and Lois Ann (both of Whittlesford with correct ages) with 2 daughters - Sarah Ann and Mary JB, also of Whittlesford. Based this 1861 census, it is very likely that Lois Ann's surname as well as Mary Jane's "B" initial was Barnes which is confirmed by the 1856 Marriage record of Lois and William.

Barnes - Lois Ann Barnes (b. 1836)

  • Lois Ann Barnes' husband, William Thomas Arnold, is "missing" by the 1871 census. However she has a son, Louis Frederick Arnold, who is about 5 years old on the 1881 census. Which begs the question - Who is Louis' father?

Burgess - Geoff Burgess (b. 1915) and Muriel Peel (b. 1921)

  • Both Geoff Burgess and Muriel Peel have "Foster" as a middle name. Although it seems unlikely, their son, Robert Burgess (b. 1944), has confirmed that it is correct.

Burley - Walter Burley (b. 1837) and Ann Morris (b.1837)

  • A 1901 UK Census form shows Walter living with a boarder.
  • Another 1901 UK Census form shows Ann living with her son Frederick Thomas and his wife, Ada

Eagle - Arthur William Eagle

  • "My Grandad is Arthur William Eagle now deceased. His mother was Lucy Ellen Maybe and father was George Arthur Charles Lewis Eagle. He had no brothers nor sisters. His grandparents were Alice Barnes and George Eagle. They had loads of children, more than I realised as it seems a few died very young from the records I have found.

Arthur married Constance and they had 2 children Margaret Patricia Eagle and William John Eagle. These are my dads half brothers and sisters I am interested in tracing.

After divorcing, Constance remarried a Taylor and it looks like the children took his surname because I have found records of a marriage of a William John Eagle to a Susan Cundey in Doncaster on the same date at the same place as a William John Taylor married a Susan Cundey. Coincidence! Also the blog I found from Margaret Eagle named her son as a Robert Taylor suggesting she was unmarried. She is in Australia.

My grandad remarried Muriel Bertha Hunt and my dad Anthony David Eagle was born in 1949. He married my mother Christina (Denise) and a long I came (Caroline) and my brother Philip. That's as far as our line goes at present!"
    - Caroline

Gambie - James Gambie (b. 1794)

  • Elias Gambie is not a child of James Gambie and Mary Hale. The 1851 Census shows him as a "visitor" (possibly a grandson).
  • William and probably Charles, listed in 1841 census, must be sons of 1st marriage - Mary was too young.
  • 1841 census shows spelling as Gambey. 1851 shows it as Gambie

Howe - Frederick James Howe (b. 1855)

  • Our database has Frederick and Mary Ann "Polly" Howe born almost exactly 9 months apart. This seems unlikely. Since we have Fredericks birth date pretty well nailed down we probably have Polly's wrong.
  • The children listed on the 1901 census for Frederick and Mary Jane Arnold are from Frederick's 1st marriage to Emily Jane Sheldrick.

Howe - Stephen Howe (b. 1792) and Ann Scott (b. 1792)

  • Cynthia Howe's genealogy chart has Stephen Howe and Ann Scott born in 1797. All the ages on the 1841 census match their children in our database, but not Stephen and Ann. I think the Cynthia's birth dates are wrong and they should be abt 1792 for Stephen and Ann. In Stephen's case that seems more in line with his brothers and sisters.

Sheldrick - Emily Jane Sheldrick (b. 1863)

  • In the 1871 Thriplow Census, Emily is living with her Grandparents, Thomas Sheldrick and Rebecca Trigg Sheldrick. Her cousin Horace is living there as well.

  • "One other thought - when reviewing the 1861 census data that shows John as Butcher and Emily as age 1. It is very likely that John and Elizabeth had another Emily in 1860 and that she died. There is no way that in 1861 "our" Emily is alive in 1861 and her older brother Charles 1862 is not born yet or on the 1861 census. The only other census that Emily is on is 1871 (age 8) where she is visiting her grandfather. By 1881 she is married to FJ [Frederick James Howe]. They likely had a previous daughter Emily (perhaps something like Emily Thurston Sheldrick) then she died (before our Emily is born), Charles came next and then Emily Jane. It is unlikely that the census data is wrong.

One other thing that has been bothering me is the comment from Aunt Joan [Howe Payne] about marrying "the Lord of the Manor's daughter." How would a commoner carpenter have sufficient status to be able to do that, especially with her being only 17? My conclusion was that he likely got her pregnant. This is confirmed by the date of birth of Mabel, 20 Mar 1881. Emily was 3½ months pregnant at the time of the "shotgun" wedding!! As her grandfather Thomas was her witness, and her father John died around 1880, the news of her pregnancy to a commoner, probably killed him."
